Ruth 3:1

Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you?”

(NKJV)

Today was such a blessing for me.  I got to do what has become one of my favorite joys:  to teach God’s Word to a group of ladies.  Nothing fills me up more than to speak of God’s truth to a group of people who are interested.  It’s a captive audience and it’s thrilling to testify before them how God has moved in my life and used circumstances to change me.  Praise God!

Then I came home to a gaggle of people.  They were hungry and tired.  It was so tempting to feed them and toss them into bed.  (That is the way it went for the baby!)  Instead, we sat down for the evening devotions.  To say they were a captive audience would be pushing the envelope.  The two year old was jumping off the hearth.  The eight year old was holding his elbow nursing a carpet burn.  The nine year old was arguing over who’s going to read last tonight.  Let’s just say, the interest level for God’s Word seemed to be non-existent.

It made me want to throw in the towel!  But what will it benefit me if I train the whole world and can’t train my own kids?  We’ve been reading this week the book of Ruth.  You remember the story?  Ruth, a widowed Moabite, travels to Bethlehem to live with her Israelite mother-in-law.  They need a man to be the kinsman redeemer since Ruth never had children with her deceased husband.  It looks in chapter two like Boaz is the one!  I am reminded of the sparkle that hit my daughter’s eyes when I gave her the cliff-hanger ending…there was a kinsman that was closer than Boaz.  She wanted to read the rest of the story right then.

That’s what motivated me to march on through chapter 3.  You see, I love the Word and it has radically changed my life.  I love to read it, to study it, and to teach it.  I want my children to have the same love for God’s Word.  That, in essence, will be their security.  Just like Naomi, I want it to go well for my children.  I want it to go well for the ladies I teach.  I want it to go well for me.  Following the truths of God’s Word is the way that will happen.  Won’t you follow God’s Word today?

Deut. 12:28

Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

(NKJV)
